Rick Perlstein claims that this assault reveals some of the warped psychology within the conservative mentality of intervention, as happened when Congressional Republicans frolicked to the "rescue" of Terry Shiavo. In this physical assault, the perpetrators admitted that they beat up the dad, to "rescue" the fallen soldier from "being used" in an agenda "not of his choosing".
