ENDA Update: Victory Might Just Come

Turning of Events: Bad News, Then Good

Hi gang,

An update on the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA). My earlier posts told of the strategy by House Dems to take out gender identity from the bill. Thus we got two bills.

We got the original bill, H.R. 2015, which protected both sexual orientation AND gender identity.

And we have the new bill, H.R. 3685, which protects sexual orienation ONLY. For awhile this was the bill we were advised to oppose, in favor of 2015. I made calls to my representative to demand just that.

Bad news: 2015 died in committee and 3685 took its place

Good news: Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin, an out lesbian and pro-gay advocate, has called for an amendment to be added to 3685 which would put gender identity back

I have not read the amendment or the new 3685, so I can't tell if it will be the exact same as 2015, but from what I've absorbed from the trans orgs it looks like it.

NEW MISSION: We call our House Representatives to demand that the Baldwin amendment get added to 3685.

More Good News: Bigoted Congressmen Fail to Weaken ENDA

In addition to winning a restorative amendment, we also crushed four anti-gay amendments proposed by two of the Republican House members.

Who offered these homophobic amendments?

Congressman Mark Souder - (202) 225-4436
Congressman Peter Hoekstra - (202) 225-4401

Their failed amendments
